How Big Are Giant Betta Fish?

If you have been wondering exactly how big giant betta fish are, you have come to the right place. We love giant bettas. They are unique and fascinating creatures. Of course, all betta fish are, aren’t they? These pet fish have bigger personalities than the average aquarium fish. So, a bigger betta is even better, right? Let’s talk about giant betta fish!

    What are Giant Betta Fish?

Giant betta fish are simply bettas selectively bred to achieve a larger size. You may read that some giant bettas are more aggressive or less aggressive than other bettas. What we have found is that they vary just like all bettas. Some are more aggressive and some are sweeter. Like other bettas, they have unique personalities. Our Giant Galaxy Koi Bettas do tend toward a sweeter temperament, just like the standard Galaxy Koi Bettas. And as they grow and mature they tend to be calmer and lazier than when they are active betta babies. Giant betta fish are beautiful betta fish that come in a variety of color combinations and patterns.

How Big Are Giant Betta Fish?

The mature size of most giant betta fish is 3 to 5 inches. Some grow even larger, but not usually bigger than 7 inches. These large betta fish are mature and close to full size around 7 to 8 months of age, but they can continue to grow throughout their lives. Breeding, the size of your aquarium, and the care you provide all contribute to the size of your giant betta.

Your average betta fish is about 2.25 inches, while giant betta fish average about 4 inches.

How to Care For Giant Betta Fish?

Caring for these big bettas is pretty much the same as caring for standard bettas. But we must consider their ultimate size when choosing a fish aquarium. The tank for a lone giant betta should be at least 5 gallons. The rule of thumb for just about all aquarium fish is at least 1 gallon per 1 inch of fish. Water should always be treated with a water conditioner before placing it in your betta tank. An aquarium heater is recommended for bettas to keep the water temperature within the ideal range. Offer your betta decor they can hide in. Live and silk plants and other decor that lacks sharp and uneven edges that can damage delicate fins are best. Read more about betta fish care

Just like standard bettas, male giant bettas should be housed alone or with compatible species of fish in a larger tank. Female giant bettas can be housed in a sorority aquarium with other female bettas or can be in a tank with other companion fish. Popular companion fish include cory catfish, neon other non aggressive tetras, guppies, harlequin rasboras, kuhli loaches, and plecos. Other good tank mates for bettas include african dwarf frogs, ghost shrimp, and zebra snails. Male and female bettas can be housed together successfully but considerations for potential breeding must be made. When pairing bettas with any other fish, caution should always be observed.
