But Hellboy’s color comes from his “skin” and “subcutaneous layer,” not his scales, making his reds darker, more aggressive, deeper, and denser.
The origin of the Hellboy betta fish
The Hellboy Betta was developed in 2014, during the height of the Koi Betta trend. Breeders began crossbreeding various Koi Bettas (red, white, and black) with distinctly darker colors. The result was that some were completely red, and the color was so intense that they were separated into a new lineage known as the “Hellboy Betta.”
Although Hellboy Bettas are relatively easy to develop and are a byproduct of Koi Bettas, they have been further developed, resulting in the Hellboy Betta, which has a highly stable bloodline. A new development was also developed by crossbreeding Hellboy Bettas with Fancy Bettas, resulting in the even more beautiful “Fancy Hellboy Betta.”

Raising Hellboy Betta Fish
Generally, the care of a Heboy betta is not much different from that of other bettas, but the care factors also affect the intensity of the color.
- Must be raised in clean water at a temperature of 27–30°C.
- Feed high protein foods (red mites, bloodworms, good quality pellets Nice Betta Pro)
- Avoid letting the fish swim in a tank with a filter system and strong whirlpools, as this will stress the fish and cause their color to fade. They may also eat less and have health problems later on.
- Using Indian almond leaves in conjunction with this will make the fish darker in color. However, be careful with the Fancy Hellboy, as it will cause the scales to become so colored that it will be almost indistinguishable from the Hellboy betta.
